After spending time watching the flamingos we continued inland to Carcassonne. Carcassone was founded by the Visigoths in the fifth century, though the Romans had fortified the settlement earlier (100 BC). The fortress, which was thoroughly restored in 1853 by the theorist and architect Eugene Viollet-le-Duc, is on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. The fortification consists of a double ring of ramparts and 53 towers. It's a stunning place!
Time for a break in the sunshine.
Off we go again--this time up onto the ramparts.
We had a lovely lunch outside at a cafe in one of the courtyards within the walled city.
Then walked through the old streets of the city to the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire.
Then more walking of the ramparts as we left the walled city.
We drove over the River Aude to see the Pont Vieux and the city from afar.
