Belesta

Jo went on a field trip today with Sophie's class to Belesta. It is the site of a fairly recent (1983) find of extensive neolithic artefacts dating back 6500 years! We visited the museum and saw ancient tools (axes, crude needles for sewing animal skins, etc), pottery, weapons, jewelery, and human and animal remains from the cave at Belesta.

The guide explained all about the prehistoric culture and activities, and the children made pots with clay:


And made necklaces by carving holes in chunks of stone using 'authentic' tools of the day:

And carved pictures similar to those that appear in caves in this area onto stone tablets:

They all got nicely dusty!

On the way home we got a little closer to the hoodoo-type scenery that we saw last week on our way back from the mountains. We'll definitely have to get an up-close look at these features soon.
